Microsoft Announces Availability of VDK 2.0 (Redmond, WA)-- Microsoft is proud to announce the availability of Version 2.0 of their popular Virus Developers Kit (VDK). The product, incorporated into the Windows 3.x, NT and Windows 95 product families, provides easy access to program crashing and computer hang functions that can be difficult for the casual user to detect and correct. Developers can now include the same types of operational flaws into their own programs, opening the door to add-on products such as anti-virus programs, and continual product upgrades. Besides increasing revenue streams for small companies, these tactics keep companies in the public eye, providing increased exposure for VDK-compliant companies. Using the package, programmers can effortlessly include code that detects if OS/2 is being used on the machine, and if so, automatically delete all Extended Attribute files. In addition, VDK includes a "Stealth" option, which can detect bogus operating systems such as Novell Netware. When found, all Windows apps can be forced to run at half-speed, quarter-speed, or completely fail, at the programmers option. Finally, the Stealth option allows the program to cause application errors, and tie the resulting error path to another program, from any other vendor. This feature, which was extensively tested with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access, is considered the tour-de-force in subterfuge code. It has resisted attempts at disassembly and reverse engineering by including code that automatically detects a modem, and dials the legal office in Redmond whenever an illegal code access attempt is made. Version 2.0 is distinguishable from Version 1.0 by the more user friendly message "General Protection Fault", where Version 1.0 used the more cryptic "Unrecoverable Application Error". A Microsoft spokesperson indicated that Version 3.0 of the VD Kit will be further improved, and will use the message "General Application Fault". VDK 2.0 is priced at $495, and will be available 4/1/95. A Pentium- specific version is available for $494.993327, and will be available 4/31/95. Current owners of DOS can obtain a copy of VDK 2.0 for about $100 at any computer store, as part of Windows 3.1. After August 1995, the price will be $795, unless purchased with Windows 95, in which case there will be no charge for VDK (pending Justice Department approval for linked-code products).
