This just came over the 4/1-Net information line! ----------cut here---------- MICROSOFT CORP. BUYS IBM CORP. Redmond -- In a move that is sure to shake the computer industry, Microsoft, Corp., the world's largest software developer, has purchased International Business Machines Corp. Microsoft CEO William Gates announced the purchase at a press conference here this morning. Citing "a great potential for combining of resources" between the two companies, Gates and his company purchased the blue chip long-time industry leader IBM for an undisclosed amount. Explaining the sudden change in direction, an IBM spokesman said, "We've actually been looking into this possibility for quite some time. Although the two companies have been less than cooperative with one another in recent years, the market wants and needs a unifying force in the computer industry. This will be it." The new mega-conglomerate, Microsoft International Corp., will be involved with every facet of computer production and operation. IBM's PC manufacturing and research divisions will be immediately integrated with Microsoft's operating system division to design an advanced computer system which will "Blow away everything else out there," said Gates. The new system, which will be known as the PowerSoft PC, will run Windows/2, a fully object-oriented 32-bit multitasking operating system, in one megabyte of memory, considerably less than most current systems require. The PowerSoft-Windows/2 machine will also come complete with a fax-capable modem and a television/cable interface for the next generation of interactive "Information Superhighway" services. "This is really going to be good for the industry," said one Novell executive who asked to remain anonymous. Many other industry pundits agree that the huge resources and technical knowledge of the two companies will no doubt form an amazing combination. "The world is really going to change now," said another analyst. While Microsoft is currently facing a Department of Justice investigation for illegal trade practices, Mr. Gates did not seem too concerned that this latest merger would be a problem. "We can always buy the DoJ, too," Mr. Gates explained. ----------end here---------- Todd Louis Green ---------------- If it's not perfect, make it better. ^-^ $ MolchiGin: The Catholic University of America (2:50/128.0@fidonet) --------------------------- Final Cut ------------------------- Dmitry --- * Origin: Silent Infinity Surrounds Your Mind (2:5020/32)
