Well, the modem does not analyze V.42 bit in V.8 capabilities frame (because some modems do not set this bit). V.42 handshake in V.34 mode is accomplished via traditional ODP/ADP and SABME. Therefore, LAP-M handshake may fail due to line noise or inappropriate speed selection (the modem may select too fast rate and fallback later, quite in time to negotiate MNP-4). Sometimes you're getting -45dB where modems like Brightcom fail to handshake. See, no one promised you that IDC modem would be superior on all lines and connections. On some lines you may get a better result using a different brand (fortunately we provide with moneyback). Most occassions, people are getting better results using IDC modems but not always!
